Doctoral Programme
There are three ways to complete a regular doctoral programme in the Humanities at the University of Vienna. While all doctoral students must complete the compulsory courses and all elements of the doctoral programme (see curriculum), their path to a successful doctorate differs in terms of funding, access to the programmes of the Doctoral School and eligibility to apply for the funding opportunities:
- Doctoral candidates with a position at the University of Vienna at the Docschool
- Self funded doctoral candidates at the Docschool
- Doctoral candidates in the Humanities and Cultural Studies outside the Docschool
Special features of the doctoral schools at the University of Vienna
Since the introduction of the new SPL and Docschools, some dissertation fields can be studied under several SPL and the SSC responsibility always results from the SPL:
Constelation 1: Doctoral candidate A conducts research in the dissertation field Linguistics (normally anchored in the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, SPL 42), but is assigned to the Doctoral School of Education (SPL 59). This means that the candidate must contact the StudyServiceCenter of Education.
Constellation 2: Doctoral candidate B is researching in the dissertation field of Linguistics (SPL 42) and is assigned to the Doctoral School of Philological and Cultural Studies (also SPL 42). In this case, the StudiesServiceCenter of Phil-Culture is responsible.
We ask all doctoral students to pay attention to these responsibilities.
When it comes to funding applications, do not contact the SSC, but always the Center for Doctoral Studies or the contact person at the doctoral school!
